Jennifer Hiscock, Science & Technology Advisor of Natural Resources Canada’s CanmetENERGY research labs, will present highlights from the highly anticipated update to the Smart Grid in Canada report. The report looks at regional approaches to smart grid, provides an update on the state of smart grid development across the country, and discusses key issues such as big data, Green Button, fostering innovation and intelligent load management. Sasha Sud will discuss Ontario specific initiatives in this national context. Industry executives, entrepreneurs and stakeholder representatives are being invited to attend and participate in the Q&A discussion. Bruce will talk about smart grid drivers from a global perspective and discuss some of the key efforts around integration of renewables. He will focus on some of the research intitiatives being undertaken with utilities and academia – globally and here in Canada.

With the roll-out of smart meters across all homes and small businesses in Ontario, there is a great opportunity to leverage all of the electrical consumption data that is currently being generated by this infrastructure. This presentation will talk about Ontario’s effort and success at using a standards based approach to make this electricity consumption data available to consumers and to authorized third parties of their choice. Over the last eight months, the Ontario Ministry of Energy and MaRS Discovery District have led an industry-based working group that has reviewed options for facilitating access to electricity consumption data and has embarked on the first adoption of the Green Button Standard in Canada.  The Green Button standard adoption in Ontario will facilitate secure, standardized, electronic access to electricity consumption data to consumers in Ontario. Sasha Sud will present on these topics looking at where we are now, and what’s coming next.
