Natural Gas: Impact On The Energy Mix
Brian Gormley, Director, Policy, Economics, and Information, Canadian Gas Association (CGA)
Andrew Pietrewicz, Director of Resource Integration, Ontario Power Authority (OPA)

Developments in hydraulic fracturing and other extraction methods have vastly increased the accessible reserves of natural gas. The resultant drop in natural gas prices has many analysts predicting energy independence for the United States. The abundant reserves and relatively inexpensive gas prices are causing many energy decisions to be revisited. In Ontario, natural gas has been displacing coal. In California, nuclear plant shutdowns increase reliance on natural gas. In many jurisdictions without feed-in-tarriff programs, renewables such as wind and solar have become uneconomic when compared to natural gas. What wil be the long term impact of natural gas on the energy mix? What role will natural gas play in transportion? Will natural gas related technologies and developments impact the deployment of energy storage, smart grid, transportation and other important energy initiatives that were contemplated in a world before we were aware of the natural gas cornucopia that is now upon us? These and other questions will be addressed by our panelists and discussed with seminar participants.
