Certainly among the most adventurous, ambitious and thought provoking ideas at Vancouver’s recent Globe2010 was the video depicting Masland City being built near Dubai in United Arab Emirates. Initiated in 2006, the completely sustainable, carbon-zero project is projected to cost USD$22 billion and take some eight years to build. The city is planned to cover 6 square kilometres (2.3 sq mi) and will be home to 45,000 to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses, primarily commercial and manufacturing facilities specializing in environmentally-friendly products, and more than 60,000 workers are expected to commute to the city daily.

To see the video for yourself, go to the Masdar City site.

Kevin Healy, Head of Marketing, told me that Canada’s SDTC has four portfolio companies being considered for implementation within Masland City.
