Earlier this week on February 23, 2009, Ontario’s McGuinty government tabled the highly anticipated Green Energy Act. Reaction has been mixed but generally applauded for the leadership and boldness shown. Expectedly, David Suzuki, wind and solar power groups, and most environmentalists are receptive. Farmers, businessmen and others are dubious because the plan is short on details. Greenpeace is squawking because Ontario will still rely heavily on nuclear. Homeowners are skeptical about the imposed energy audit and consumers like the idea of green energy but are wary of potential price increases. George Smitherman, the energy minister, stated that 50,000 jobs will be created as a result of the act.
